Across one’s lifetime, people spend an average 90,000 hours at work. It’s therefore unsurprising that many people seek deeper meaning in their work: They want to feel that their work has a positive and significant impact.
Yet, work is roughly half as meaningful as people would like it to be, and they often attribute a lack of satisfaction in their work to a lack of meaning. In light of this gap, future fit organizations need to dedicate more time to promoting greater meaning in the workplace.
In the following IESE Insights article, I review my recent work showing one way that employees can come to experience meaning in their work, by aligning on their view of the world around them with a close other.
